Monitoring Desk

Sunday - November 27, 2016

HAVANA (Cuba):
Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, a Cuban politician and revolutionary, who ruled as 16th Prime Minister (PM) of Cuba from 1959 to 1976 and then as 17th President of Cuba from 1976 to 2008, died on Friday night at the age of 90; Fidel is known worldwide for having defied the United States (US) for long after having brought the Cold War in 1959 to the Western hemisphere.

United Nations (UN) Secretary General (UN-SG) Ban Ki-moon in a statement on Saturday said that he was saddened to learn of the death of Fidel Castro Ruz, former President of Cuba.

An emblematic figure of the Cuban revolution, Fidel Castro was prominent in Latin America and influential in world affairs.

As Prime Minister, President, Commander of the Cuban Armed Forces and First Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party, his role at the helm of Cuba spanned nearly 50 years, during which he left a major imprint on his country and on global politics.

President Fidel Castro will be remembered for his leadership of the Cuban revolution and for advances in Cuba in the fields of education, literacy and health.  His revolutionary ideals left few indifferent.

He was a strong voice for social justice in global discussions at the UN General Assembly and international and regional forums.

Ban vividly recalls meeting him during a visit to Cuba in January 2014, and was impressed by the former President’s passion and lively engagement on a wide range of issues.

Ban extended his condolences to the Cuban people and to the family of the former President, particularly to President Raul Castro.

Ban hopes Cuba will continue to advance on a path of reform, greater prosperity and human rights.  At this time of national mourning, he offers the support of the United Nations to work alongside the Cuban people.

Separately, Turkish Foreign Ministry in a statement on Saturday said, “We have learned with great sorrow the passing away of Fidel Castro, the legendary leader of the Cuban Revolution.”

Fidel Castro, who realised radical reforms in his country in many areas ranging from health to education and from art to science, has left a legacy of values and ideals which will lead the way for young generations in Cuba.

The struggle to which he devoted his life had an impact not only in Cuba but in the whole world and has received respect even in different political camps.

He fought against global injustice and worked towards the establishment of a more egalitarian and solidarist world.

His words “Another World is Possible” reflect the common aspiration of billions of people today, ranging from Latin America to Asia and from the Middle East to Africa, regardless of their political views.

We still remember the interest and warm feelings displayed by our people to Fidel Castro when he came to İstanbul for the Habitat Conference in 1996.

We extend our condolences to the family of Fidel Castro and friendly people of Cuba.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday offered condolences in a telephone call to incumbent Cuban President Raul Castro, who happens to be Fidel’s brother.

Vladimir held that Fidel was a patriotic person who held his country high for which he earned the love of Cuban and respect worldwide.

Vladimir praised Fidel for having kept friendly relations between Cuba and the Russian Federation.

Vladimir held that Russia will continue to follow the policy of Fidel by continuing Russian Cuban strategic partnership, continuation of comprehensive cooperation policy.

Separately, US President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday held that his administration will do all that it can to ensure that the freedom and prosperity of Cuban people only increases, although he added that what Fidel did cannot be erased from memory lanes but held that times have changed.

Donald stressed that he will ensure that the Cubans will be able to live in freedom, “They so richly deserve.”
