ISLAMABAD: Prime minister (PM) Imran Khan casted his vote during the presidential ballot at parliament house on Tuesday, presidential candidate Arif Alvi, hailing from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), bagged 211 votes from both the national assembly (NA) and senate winning the presidential race defeating Fazl-ur-Rehman, hailing from Jamiat Ullema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F), bagging 131 votes and Aitzaz Ahsan, hailing from Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), bagging 81 votes.

According to an official statement, NA speaker Asad Qaiser and deputy speaker Qasim Suri congratulated Alvi on his election as 13th president of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

In their separate congratulatory messages to Alvi, Qaiser and Suri extended warm facilitation to him on his success in presidential election and said that his election was evidence of confidence and trust of leadership, members of NA, senate and provincial assemblies reposed in his acumen and capabilities. 

They said that election of new president was another step towards smooth transfer of power in democratic dispensation which was a good omen for democracy. 

They said that Alvi is a statesman and a seasoned political figure and under his sagacious leadership the federation and democratic institutions will be strengthening and relations between federation and provinces will become more cordial. 

They expressed the hope that he will come up to the people’s expectations that their representatives reposed on him. They prayed for his success during his tenure.
