RAWALPINDI: Chinese foreign office (FO) spokesman Lu Kang informed on Friday that both Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK/North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (ROK/South Korea) reached important consensus and issued a joint declaration on improving inter-Korean relations, easing military tension on the Korean peninsula and advancing the realisation of ‘denuclearisation’ and long-term stability.

According to Kang, the leaders of DPRK and ROK held a successful meeting on Friday, the positive outcomes of the summit are conducive to promoting reconciliation and cooperation between the two sides, upholding peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and advancing the political settlement process.

China welcomes it and extends its congratulations.

The DPRK and the ROK belong to the same nation, China always supports the two sides in building up mutual trust and improving their relations through dialogue and consultation. This is in the interests of the two sides and the region, and in line with the shared aspiration of the international community.

We hope and believe that the DPRK and the ROK will follow through on the consensus reached between the two leaders at this summit and continue to advance reconciliation and cooperation.

We hope that the relevant parties will maintain the momentum for dialogue and work together to promote the denuclearisation of the peninsula and the political settlement process. China stands ready to continue to play its positive role to this end, he concluded.

Meanwhile, United Nations (UN) secretary-general António Guterres’ spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric mentioned that Guterres applauds Friday’s truly historic summit between the leaders of North Korea and South Korea; many around the world were moved by the powerful imagery of the two leaders coming together to advance harmony and peace on the Korean peninsula.

According to Dujarric, Guterres salutes the courage and leadership that resulted in the important commitments and agreed actions outlined in the “panmunjom declaration” for peace, prosperity and unification of the Korean peninsula.

He counts on the parties to build on their first meeting and swiftly implement all agreed actions to further inter-Korean trust-building and reconciliation; sincere dialogue; and progress towards sustainable peace and verifiable denuclearisation on the Korean peninsula.

Guterres looks forward to these gains being consolidated and advanced at the summit between the leaders of the United States (US) and the DPRK expected to take place in the near future.

He pledges his commitment and readiness to further assist in these important processes.
