Will enhance Myanmar armed forces’ capabilities: Shoigu

NAYPYIDAW (Myanmar): Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu in his meeting with Myanmar armed forces commander-in-chief senior general Min Aung Hlaing, on Saturday, announced Russian defence ministry’s readiness to develop the bilateral partnership by strengthening of Myanmar armed forces’ combat readiness; an official statement said.

According to detail, in the past year, both the militaries organised many events, agreed big plans for furthering the bilateral military cooperation.

Shoigu pointed out the positive dynamics of cooperation between Russia and Myanmar in the military sphere, promoted by agreement on military cooperation of 2016.

Russia is ready to share with Myanmar its experience of fighting against long-range unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), used for attacks by terrorists in Syria.

“There is a new terrorist threat that evolved in Syria – UAVs that can operate at a range of over 100 kilometers (km). Russia is ready to share its combat experience against this threat,” Shoigu said. He pointed out that such terrorist attacks can happen, not only in Syria.

An intergovernmental agreement on the simplified procedure for calls of warships to the ports of Russia and Myanmar was reached on Saturday, after the talks between Shoigu and Hlaing.

The agreement was signed by Russian deputy defence minister lieutenant general Alexander Fomin and Myanmar deputy defence minister rear admiral Myint Nwe.

Both sides pointed out that the agreement was to extend bilateral military cooperation.

Hlaing expressed hope that the military cooperation between Russia and Myanmar will enhance.

Counterterrorism warfare is an extremely topical issue for Myanmar. In his truth, Hlaing informed his Russian counterpart that the delegation from Myanmar will participate at the Moscow conference on international security 2018 in Moscow, as well as in several competitions of the international army games 2018.
