According to a press release, the Russian DM-GoA Shoigu released the results of Kavkaz-2020, which took place from September 21 to 26 in the Russian southern military district (SMD), at the national centre for state defence control (NCSDC).

The exercise completed the cycle of operational and combat training of the Russian armed forces this year.

Russian DM-GoA Shoigu noted, the combat training of troops and preparation for the exercise took place in a difficult situation associated with the spread of a new coronavirus (COVID-19) infection.

“As soon as possible, the defence ministry created an effective system to counter the pandemic, the measures taken made it possible to avoid mass infection of military personnel and to carry out the planned activities of combat training, including preparations for the manoeuvres of Kavkaz-2020,” he said.

Russian DM-GoA Shoigu stressed that new ways of all-arms actions of troops in the complicated situation of the modern armed conflict were worked out.

Special attention was paid to the use of high-precision weapons, intelligence and electronic warfare systems, automation of command and control processes, as well as the integration of intelligence and information control systems.

New reconnaissance-strike and reconnaissance-fire complexes, automated control systems have shown high efficiency.

In addition, an experiment on the formation and order of combat use of new type of formations in the mobile echelon was successfully completed. Joint actions of a separate airborne assault brigade and an army aviation brigade significantly increased the dynamics and pressure of destroying the enemy.

The head of the military department added that during the exercise, the crews of modern long-range anti-aircraft missile systems S-300V4, S-400 “Triumph” and anti-aircraft missile systems “Buk-M3” hit the latest high-speed air targets that mimic tactical missiles and enemy aircraft.

For the first time, the airborne troops dropped 10 combat vehicles from military transport aircraft at once, prepared for landing by regular crews.

Engineering units of the SMD disrupted the approach of the reserves of the mock enemy with the help of a “fire wall” two kilometres (kms) long.

As part of the main stage of the exercise, Russian military personnel used the latest heavy flamethrower system TOS-2 for the first time.

Based on the experience gained in Syria, the troops worked out the most effective ways to destroy the “Jihad mobiles”.

“On September 25, the supreme commander-in-chief took part in the active phase of the exercise at the Kapustin Yar training ground, he highly appreciated the professionalism and training of the personnel," Russian DM-GoA Shoigu said.

He recalled that in total, almost 79.5 thousand servicemen of various types and branches of the armed forces participated in the manoeuvres of Kavkaz-2020.

Up to 280 tanks, 450 infantry fighting vehicles and armoured personnel carriers, 200 artillery systems and multiple launch rocket systems were involved.

“At the same time, I emphasise that all the requirements of the Vienna document of 2011 regarding the number of military personnel and military equipment of the land forces, navy and air forces formations were met during the exercises conducted under a single command,” Russian DM-GoA Shoigu added.

“This was confirmed by inspection teams from Germany and Denmark, as well as joint missions from Germany, Romania and France, which worked under the open skies treaty (OST) during the active phase of the exercise,” he remarked.

The scope of the exercise, according to Russian DM-GoA Shoigu, was more than 1,000 square kms, practical actions of the troops were practiced at 6 combined-arms and two aviation ranges, as well as in the waters of the Black and Caspian seas.

“Demonstrating maximum openness, we proactively brought information about the exercise to all Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) participating states and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) headquarters,” Russian DM-GoA Shoigu said, and added, “The military attaches of foreign states accredited in Moscow were informed in advance of the goals and objectives of the exercise, the areas where it was held, as well as the forces and means involved.”

In addition, the preparation and conduct of the manoeuvres of Kavkaz-2020 was covered on the internet resources of the defence ministry, in foreign and Russian media, the head of the Russian military department recalled.

“Summing up, I note that the training was held at a high professional level, I want to thank the personnel for their initiative and diligence, their ability to make nonstandard decisions in a complex and dynamically changing environment,” Russian DM-GoA Shoigu said, and added, “Despite some quarantine measures, the armed forces have demonstrated increased combat capabilities to neutralise threats to the military security of the Russian Federation.”

The created coalition group has shown excellent results in performing tasks to resolve armed conflicts related to countering terrorism, Russian DM-GoA Shoigu concluded.
