ISLAMABAD: The national assembly (NA) standing committee on energy — power distribution — (NA-SC-EPD) members, on Monday, showed reservations regarding a possible imposition of a surcharge on electricity.

According to a press release, the fourth meeting of the NA-SC-EPD was held at parliament house, in the federal capital, under chairmanship of NA member (NMA) Chaudhry Salik Hussain, of NA-65 constituency — Chakwal-II, hailing from Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N).

NA-SC-EPD chairman Hussain and members showed reservations on the amendments proposed for “The Regulation of Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electric Power (Amendment) Bill, 2020,” regarding the vague procedure of surcharge to be imposed and utilisation of funds generated through these surcharges.

The concerned ministry was asked to strictly adhere the provincial quota requirements for the minorities and disabled persons while filling the vacant posts in DISCOs.

The concerned ministry will be giving briefings on generation and transmission, distribution and merit order and circular debt management plan in the upcoming meetings of NA-SC-EPD.

A sub committee was also appointed by the committee to discuss and recommend for resolving the issues faced by the legislators with respect to Karachi Electric Company (KE) and different DISCOs of Sindh under the convenor-ship of the MNA Lal Chand, hailing from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
