NEW YORK (United States): The foreign minister (FM) Shah Mahmood Qureshi, on Thursday, stressed that only a stable and broad-based government in Afghanistan, which reflects its diversity and preserves the gains made by the country since 2001, will be able to ensure that Afghan territory is never exploited by transnational terrorist groups ever again.

According to press releases, he met with United States (US) secretary of state (SoS) Antony J. Blinken on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly (UNGA) session.

FM Qureshi noted that a new political reality had emerged in Afghanistan.

“While the Taliban should be held to their commitments, the international community has a moral obligation to help the Afghan people deal with the growing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan,” he urged.

The FM reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to facilitating efforts for an inclusive political settlement in Afghanistan.

He hoped that the world will not repeat the mistake of disengaging with Afghanistan.

FM Qureshi said that close engagement between Pakistan and the US had always been mutually beneficial and a factor for stability in South Asia.

He reiterated Pakistan’s desire for a balanced relationship with the US that was anchored in trade, investment, energy and regional connectivity.

The FM highlighted the grave human rights’ situation in the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

He underscored the importance of resolving the Kashmir dispute for lasting peace and stability in South Asia.

US SoS Blinken appreciated Pakistan’s support for the evacuation of US citizens and other nationals from Afghanistan, and its continued efforts for peace in the region.

Separately, FM Qureshi spoke with US Republican (Rep) senator (Rep-Sen) James Risch on the sidelines of his UN-related engagements in the US on Friday.

The FM reaffirmed Pakistan’s desire for a broad based, strategic partnership with the US that will advance the two countries’ shared interests in the bilateral and regional spheres.

FM Qureshi highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to facilitating efforts for achieving an inclusive political settlement in Afghanistan.

He stressed that the international community must help the Afghan people deal with the growing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
